Today, the number of obese women in the UK have outnumbered the men. According to a recent study in the UK, 23.9% of women and 22.1% of the British were stated as obese. Obesity is calculated by using the Body Mass Index (BMI) of adults. A person with a BMI of over 30 is classed as obese. Research has shown that obesity in women is a consequence of a lot of factors altogether. The fat accumulating in women is almost twice the fat accumulation in men of the same age. Let’s look at some of the potential reasons behind this rapidly increasing obesity amongst the women in the UK and also how to fight it :
The causes :
1. Improper Diet :
An undesirable weight gain mostly occurs due to an unregulated intake of calories in your diet. Consuming more calories than what the body actually needs, leads to a gradual weight gain. Studies depict that diets which are high in fat, salt and sugar (like junk food) are the primary reasons for obesity.
2. Lack of Exercise :
Lack of proper physical activity, either exercise or daily activities, could be a strong reason for obesity.
3. Genetic problems :
Obesity has a strong genetic essence. There are people who have a family history of illness like obesity. A person might inherit properties like a slower metabolism, from his/her parent(s). Factors like slower metabolism could lead to difficulty in weight loss and maintenance.
4. Medical issues :
There are cases when a woman may observe a sudden weight gain even with a regulated diet and exercise routine. This might be a sign of a medical problem, like diabetes, pregnancy, menopause, steroid consumption or a hormonal imbalance.
How to fight ?
A person need not have a strict daily workout routine to avoid getting obese. Some changes like, taking the stairs instead of elevators, avoiding prolonged sittings in front of a computer or television, can help reduce the chances of getting obese.
– Change and regulate the daily intake of calories. Consult a physician and make a diet plan.
– Exercise daily
– In case of a medical problem, consult a doctor.
