In retail there is an increasing trend for quirkiness. All sorts of products now have randomness or quirkiness as their unique selling point, and similarly physical stores have begun to experiment with more interesting displays. For certain items, such as clothes, surrealistic and idiosyncratic display can really work, here are a few ideas:
You can use pretty much anything to display products. For instance, you might use a bicycle complete with storage basket, as a kind of improvised shelf. Alternatively, you could use up-cycled goods not only as idiosyncratic shelving, but as trendy decor for your store.
It is a good idea to adopt features and fittings to use as display that match the goods that you are selling. However, this isn’t always a good idea, and the heart of the surreal idea is randomness. Therefore, if you are really embracing the spirit of random, be prepared to think outside of the box.
For instance, mannequins are obviously associated with garment retail, where they can be used to create displays that are attractive and ergonomic. However, mannequins can work well in other stores too, and male mannequins and female mannequins can add a dimension of quirkiness and trendiness, whatever your store sells.
Of course there is limits on how quirky you can go, however experience should give you some idea of your customer’s threshold for the weird. Perhaps start by introducing a few surreal elements in your store, and see how this affects sales.
