When you go to a hospital expecting to receive quality medical care, the last thing you want to happen is to come out in an even worse condition than when you went in. Unfortunately, this can sometimes be the case. But how much of this is due to natural causes and how much of it is due to the medical professionals given the task to look after us? Does it really happen that often?
Recent years have seen around a 20% increase in medical negligence cases being reported to the NHS, with a total of 16,006 patients or bereaved family members who believe they have been neglected by the health service in 2012/13. This is costing the NHS almost £19billion, almost a fifth of the annual health service budget.
This raises the question of why is this happening in the first place. Why are our doctors making so many mistakes when they come at such a high price for the tax payer? Well, it comes as no surprise when our doctors are working longer and harder shifts with less chance to take a break and regain their focus, therefore increasing the risks of more mistakes happening in our hospitals. Some of these have become dirtier, with less skilled or less experienced doctors are taking on more and more responsibilities.
Is this a good enough reason?
Absolutely not, even if the doctors are working hard or are being pushed to their maximum levels of concentration. Most doctors and nurses remain at a high standard no matter the situation, so there is no excuse for severe damage to a patient or even death. The NHS is our national service and with that it should come with a 100% trust between doctor and patient that we will all receive the greatest service we can. This is where negligence claims come in; if a patient is left ill due to a doctor’s fault then it is up to the NHS to cover any costs that may occur after, including all health costs and any other possible expenses made from the negligence.
If you think you are entitled to claim against medical negligence then it is best to speak to a professional, and if you want more information on claiming you can see more on negligence claims here. Expert help can make sure you are going in the right direction and speaking with the right people, this is so you don’t waste anymore of your valuable time.
What is negligence and how does it happen?
Negligence can come in many forms; from failure to diagnose an illness to extreme negligence such as brain damage. The list is endless but if you came out of the hospital with an issue that wasn’t intended or wasn’t expressed to you beforehand, the chances are you’re entitled to a claim.
It is important to add that these are extreme cases and that the majority of our doctors and nurses are incredibly talented and have your health at the top of their priorities. If you do receive a bad service like this, it is important you take the right action to get the right support.
